My tears are not my weakness: IPS Charu Nigam

New Delhi, May 8: A video of a Bharatiya Janata Party MLA of Uttar Pradesh is going viral on social media for all the wrong reasons. Radha Mohan Das Agarwal, an MLA in Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s hometown Gorakhpur was seen humiliating a lady IPS officer in public.

The continuous yelling left IPS Charu Nigam teary-eyed which was captured on camera. The incident occurred in the Kareemanagar area of Gorakhpur where some people protesting against a liquor shop were removed by the police.

As per reports, the police had to resort to lathi-charge after the protesters started pelting stones on the officers. The protesters approached the MLA and alleged misbehaviour by the hands of police. The protestors said that the Circle Officer Charu Nigam forcibly removed them adding that the police had hit a woman and dragged an 80-year-old man.

The angry MLA questioned the IPS officer about the action even when there had been orders by the state government to close liquor shops in densely populated residential areas. MLA was reportedly angry at the IPS because she removed the protesters whom he had told to stay put till his arrival as he wanted them to go only after his persuasion.

While the police officer accused the MLA of misbehaving, Radha Mohan refused her alleging that she exercised high-handedness with protesters.

“We are against the operation of liquor shops. People were peacefully protesting against the liquor shops, but the lady police officer forcibly removed the protestors and while doing so, she hit a woman and dragged an 80-year-old man. This simply cannot be tolerated,” he said.

“The MLA misbehaved with me and refused to acknowledge in full public view that he is speaking to a lady police officer,” Nigam said.

Nigam further said that she did not cry because of the yelling but because of the support she received from a senior officer.

“I did not weep, as it is not ingrained in my personality. However, I got emotional when my senior officer supported me.” The protesters were removed from the road as they were obstructing the traffic, she said.

MLA alleged that the police and liquor mafia have a tactic understanding and therefore the shop was suddenly reopened after 15 days.

He also rubbished allegations of misbehaviour and said he was not speaking to her but the SP.

Aggarwal said “Is my body language showing that I am misbehaving with her? I was not speaking to the CO (Charu Nigam), but to SP (City). See my body language properly.”

Charu Nigam who had actively participated in the anti-Romeo squad was dubbed as “Lady Singham” by media organisations.
